What better to do to occupy oneself with than to tackle jobs that are time-consuming and which one is inclined to procrastinate about at the best and the worst of times? So today delegated itself to become another in a long series before I'm completely finished, donating several hours to spring cleaning. This time the pantry at one end of the kitchen. The rest of the kitchen cupboards will be done gradually, but the pantry was my target today.
The shelves may not be dirty, but a year's normal use will leave some indication that a little bit of hot soapy water would be usefully employed. Perhaps just as important, it's an opportunity to tidy things up, take inventory of what's on hand that hasn't seen much use. Things can be disposed of, or made note of for future use. I believe in a well-stocked pantry, that will contain some level of cooking and baking rudiments so that there is no need when the thought occurs to produce something edible, the ingredients that go into the production are at hand.
Similarly, although there's just the two of us now to set a table for, we like a little variety in what we place our food on; some dishes that we reserve for spring, some for winter, some for company, that type of thing. And everything should be in its proper place and in order.
There is a certain satisfaction in tackling a job of this magnitude, at least once yearly. Some springs my efforts don't completely extend to doing everything I set out to do, but that doesn't much bother me. Nor should it; the effort, at the very least is extended and when it's time to set it all aside, it's best to view the work undone philosophically.
Wots up? Anything in there good to eat? |
